Vascular Brain Pathologies
“Surgical” neurovascular pathologies correspond to the pathologies most often at the origin of bleeding in the skull, also called cerebral hemorrhage. These are usually malformations of the arteries and/or veins of the brain, such as cerebral aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations. An illustration of an aneurysm is showed below.
The treatment of these malformations can be carried out after the bleeding, or ideally before in “prevention”. These are complex treatments, requiring to be carried out by highly specialized practitioners.
Two main treatment methods are possible: surgically (performed by neurosurgeons) or endovascularly (through the interior of the arteries, performed by neuroradiologists). The choice of technique is always discussed by the multidisciplinary staff, and the patient is offered the treatment deemed to be the safest and most effective. An illustration of these two main treatments (endovascular at the left and surgical at the right) is shown below.
